Ted's junior years in high school
were clearly his most notable ~ capturing the attention of
professional scouts. As a junior he hit a remarkable .583.
During his senior year, while pitching and playing outfield,
he reached the mark of .406. He was just as extraordinary
on the mound as he was hitting, completing a 16-3 record and
once striking out 23 batters. In '35, the Yankee's Bill Essick,
offered Ted $200 a month to sign with the Yank's, but Ted's
mother, May Williams, declined the offer. She didn't want
her 17-year old son to move so far away and leave his studies
incomplete. So, Ted continued to play semi-pro baseball and
earned three dollars a week. |
